Made A New Year's Resolution Yet? How athletes and coaches can set resolutions that work
Are you planning on making a New Year’s resolution for this upcoming year???
If so, you may want to consider these guidelines because today I will be offering you some tips to help you make New Year’s resolutions for this upcoming year.
The “Normal” Way To Set Resolutions
Every year, the majority of people in the US set New Year’s resolutions.
But almost all of them fail to follow through on them for an entire year.
(Obviously, we have a problem here!!!)
The reason I believe most people don’t follow through on their resolutions is …
They set their resolutions as surface-level goals.
In my opinion, this way of setting resolutions isn’t compelling enough for people to follow through and it doesn’t create a transformation of heart that will enable people to naturally stick to their resolutions.
How I Recommend Setting Resolutions
Here is how I recommend setting resolutions …
Focus on the person you desire to be and on the qualities you desire to emulate, and all the surface-level goals will fall into place naturally.
Here’s an exercise for you:
Step 1- List ALL the qualities you desire and wish to emulate for 10-15 minutes
Set a timer for 10-15 minutes, write down all the qualities you admire and want to embody.
These could be qualities such as:
- Honesty
- Integrity
- Discipline
- Work ethic
- And so on …
Step 2- Choose 1-3 most compelling topics you want to emulate
After completing your long list, choose the 1-3 topics that jump out at you most.
I say 1-3 because picking too many can dilute the amount to which your system will embody them. Once you develop those 1-3, you can choose more qualities in the future.
Step 3- Choose an action item that will demonstrate your qualities
After choosing your 1-3 topics, pick an action item for each one that will prove you are emulating that quality.
These could be actions such as:
- Going to the weight room
- Giving your teammates fist bumps and high fives
- Keeping your word and being where you say you’ll be on time
When you demonstrate that you are the person you desire to be, you begin to create the transformation of heart that will enable all the surface level goals to fall into place …
AND …
You will find new opportunities to demonstrate those qualities and be that person without limiting yourself to a few goals and forcing your own way.
Recap
- Set your timer for 10-15 minutes and write down all the qualities you admire and would like to embody
- Choose the 1-3 qualities that stand out to you most
- Choose an action item for each quality that will demonstrate you are being that person
And then, experience the transformation of heart that will enable you to become the person that automatically follows through on those surface-level goals!
Athletes and coaches for Christ, I wish you well on your journey of experiencing the transformation of heart that will help you to be the person GOD has created you to be, and I send love, gratitude, peace, and blessings to you.
Inspiring YOU every step of your way,
Kyle
